Snowcone Jones Update
Time for an update on our newest sanctuary family addition, Snow Cone Jones. Her wounds are healing very well, thank goodness. We’re thinking at this point she might not even need any reconstructive surgery. Fingers crossed.
Because of the spinal fracture and compressed disc we were not sure she would have any use of her back legs. But take a look at the videos in her FB photo album (linked below) and look at her go. Pretty impressive for a baby who could not hop just a couple weeks ago. As amazing as this is, her back end is in fact very compromised. She still needs to have her bladder manually expressed several times a day, and if you watch her move, you will see that she can’t really get her back legs up underneath her without forward motion. The right back leg is far more compromised than the left. She does use them to propel and help balance herself. She is rather amazing. See her latest photos and videos in her Facebook album here.
Each day she gets several out-of-pen exercise jaunts to help with strengthening her muscles and to help with neuromuscular coordination. She is very closely monitored (followed), and we are slowly giving her more time each day (if indicated by her progress). She also gets light massage, cold laser, and stimulation-type physical therapy. I will be consulting with a veterinary physical therapist to see if there are other therapies that would be good for her as her healing progresses. We will also be starting acupuncture soon, and looking for people to sponsor her acupuncture sessions.
