Parsnip has Come Back from Afar
In June of 2018, we rescued baby Parsnip “Sprinkles” Malone with the help of King’s County Animal Shelter. She arrived with two broken legs, and was in a considerable amount of pain. Both of the tibia in her hind legs were shattered, and there was a lot of swelling and infection.
Straight away, we brought her to Exotic Animal Veterinary Center, where she received expert care. After some surgery to clean up the fracture sites, she received two casts with hard plastic splints. Parsnip was monitored continually during her recovery, receiving painkillers, nutritional supplements, and antibiotics, as well as sedatives to make sure she could rest and minimize motion.
At first, Parsnip stayed with EAVC in intensive care, and had a few minor complications, including a fever. After some time, she was released to the care of a Zooh Corner Rabbit Rescue sanctuary home to rest and convalesce. She received all the attention and love that she deserved, enjoyed a variety of fresh greens and alfalfa hay, and managed to teach herself how to walk by scooting her “peg legs” behind her. Have you ever seen a rabbit learn to pivot on her front paws, while hiking her bum in the air?
During this time, regular checkups tracked her progress, and we saw great success in the healing of her bones. Frequent cast replacements with decreasing support afforded her more freedom and flexibility, allowing her to slowly regain the feeling of functioning hind legs.
Just last week, the casts came off, and she took her first unassisted steps. She still has a long way to go, but we are so proud of how far she has come. We created a YouTube video to celebrate her success story (so far) and would like to share it with you.
We hope you share the joy that we feel in knowing that Parsnip’s life has forever been changed. This would not have been possible without everyone who supports Zooh Corner Rabbit Rescue! This video is direct proof of the difference that everyone has made, and we are forever grateful.
Parsnip has indeed come back from very far, but she still has a long way to go. One of her legs has a very persistent infection, and she will require surgery on the bone. We are still hoping for a full recovery, but we cannot be certain until we see some progress in clearing up this infection. In the worst possible case, Parsnip may need to lose her infected leg so that she may live a long, healthy, infection-free life.
As you may know, we have been running a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Parsnip’s medical bills. We are happy to say that we achieved our initial goal of $3k, and it has clearly been put to good use! With Parsnip’s medical bills now exceeding $7k, we must ask for your continued support. Your contribution to Zooh Corner’s mounting veterinary bills will ensure that we will continue to care for Parsnip during her recovery, as well as support all of our bunnies if and when their medical needs require veterinary care.
