RHDV2 is almost always FATAL.
It only takes a minute amount of RHDV2 virus to cause infections and death. It is now considered endemic in California and remains persistent in our wild rabbit population.
RHDV2 is easily spread by contact. It can be brought into your rabbits’ environment on your feet, on a pet’s feet, via flies or mosquitos, and in some cases even via the greens or hay that has been contaminated by infected wild rabbits. RHDV2 is extremely persistent and hard to kill. It is resistant to heat and cold. It can remain in the environment for nearly three months and still be contagious. For these reasons it is crucial to get your rabbits vaccinated. Vaccinations have a 98% protection rate and they are very safe.
Please do not put your rabbits at risk. Contact your local rabbit veterinarian today and discuss getting your rabbit vaccinated. Our rabbit veterinary office, Exotic Animal Veterinary Center, in Pasadena, CA, has vaccines on hand and will be happy to help you get your bunnies protected.
