Whole Foods Responds to HRS
The House Rabbit Society (HRS) has been petitioning for the removal of rabbit meat from Whole Foods in Northern California. Recently, Liz Burkhart of Whole Foods responded to the HRS efforts with a dismissive letter that does not address the main concern of HRS – that rabbits are a popular companion animal like cats and dogs, and they should not be raised for meat production.
From the Whole Foods letter:
The reality is, for many years, lots of customers have requested that we carry rabbit; and those who want to buy rabbit will buy rabbit, whether Whole Foods Market is selling it or not.
The petition is still active, so please sign if you haven’t already, and send a letter to Whole Foods to let them know how it is unacceptable to encourage the proliferation of a cruel and insensitive industry.
Zooh Corner has recently learned that the Oz Family Farm raises rabbits and sells to Whole Foods. Please contact them and and explain, if not to the farm owners, then to others reading their Facebook wall, why raising and butchering America’s *third most popular family pet* is WRONG.
While Zooh Corner understands that this is a very emotional issue, we suggest not engaging in rude language. Aggressive language is fine, but flat-out rudeness does not beg receptiveness on the part of the reader/listener; and remember, we are not likely to change the mind of the farm owners, but we have very chance to sway the public—and that can make ALL the difference in our attempt to get Whole Foods to NOT sell the meat of our pets in their stores.
